McCabe originally wrote The Papacy in Politics Today to chronicle the role of the Catholic Church in World War One, then known as "The Great War," however he rewrote the book in 1943 to update it to includes the role of the Catholic Church in World War Two. This is a "first edition" printing of the third edition, which is the edition that includes that role of the Church in World War Two.
